Do you need a social media content strategy?

This article is jam-packed with content ideas and strategies to increase interaction, followers, and credibility on social media.

I think we’ve all been there… That moment you realize you need to post something, but what?

You start looking at what you posted last, what’s happened recently, and you come to the realization that you have nothing meaningful to share.

So you do what any dedicated biz pro would do, you post anyway.

But how’d that post do? Even more importantly – When you take a step back and look at your social media page from the perspective of an outsider, would they have a clue what you have to offer? Would they benefit from liking, or following your page?

Developing credibility and a following is getting harder and harder. You need more than pretty pictures. You need a plan.

Start with what you’ve got.

Take a look at your “about” or “bio.” Does it answer these three questions for your audience? Remember, it’s all about them, not you. People don’t care what you have to offer until they understand how it can help them.

  • What do you do?
  • How can you improve my life?
  • Why should I follow you?

Interact and re-post.

This is an important “flip-side” of your social media content strategy. Yes, your focus should be on what you post on your page, but don’t neglect what you post to other pages.

So many people are bombarded with “fake followers” who are just there for the follow-back on Instagram and Twitter. You know them, they’re the ones with the generic comments or the serial likers who suddenly disappear. (By the way, this tactic of gaining a following is frowned upon because it is not authentic and comes across pretty dang slimy.)

The best way to build an authentic following is to interact with the accounts you already follow. The amount of time you spend on this is up to you, but remember it’s not about quantity, it’s about quality.

Liking is good, but commenting is better. Just make sure the comment isn’t generic so they know you’re not one of those slimy spammers. For example, say their name and give them specific feedback that shows them you connect with what they posted or the link they shared.

But who else to follow?

  • Likeminded business owners
  • Current customers
  • Past customers
  • Potential customers
  • Hopeful customers
  • Influencers in your niche
  • Influencers in business
  • Influencers in marketing

There’s an organic correlation between the number of people you follow and your following. Like I said before, you don’t want to be one of those spammy serial followers, but you do want to find as many influencers or quality accounts to follow as possible. This takes time so let it happen along the way. Maybe look for 5 new people to follow a day based on hashtags they used or content of theirs that was shared by someone you already follow.

Pro tip:

Twitter shows us a TON of content and we miss even more. To make sure you don’t miss a tweet from your most important connections, create private lists so that you can simply read the tweet feed from your list.

Make sure you are interacting with your lists and even re-posting or sharing content that you think will help your own audience.

Now post your OWN awesome content.

The content on your social media accounts should not be random. Each post should represent a piece of your puzzle.

Sometimes we tend to get so caught up on one piece of the puzzle, we neglect another part of the puzzle that really connects with our audience. Or even worse, we confuse our audience to the point they don’t really know how we can help them. That’s when they stop caring… and stop following.
