One of the most common questions we get from marketing clients is: “How much should I spend on Google Ads to see results?”

The truth? There’s no universal answer—but there is a smart way to figure it out. Let’s walk through it together.

First, Understand What Affects Your Google Ads Budget

The amount you should spend depends on several key factors:

  • Your industry

  • Target audience

  • Location

  • Keywords

  • Ad quality

  • Competition

Because of this, two businesses in different industries (or even the same industry in different cities) might need very different budgets to see success.

But don’t worry—we use a simple formula to help determine an appropriate starting point for ad spend. It just takes a little bit of data.

The 3 Numbers You Need to Know

To estimate how much you should spend, gather these three data points:

  1. Average Cost Per Click (CPC)
If you’ve done keyword research, great—use the CPC from your research. If not, a good placeholder is $5 per click.

  2. Website Conversion Rate
This is the percentage of people who visit your website and take the action you want (call, form fill, etc.). If you don’t know this yet, use a general benchmark of 10%.

  3. Sales Conversion Rate
This is how many of those leads turn into actual paying customers. If you’re not sure, a typical average is around 60%.

The Formula: How to Estimate Your Google Ads Results

Let’s plug in the numbers.

Step 1: Calculate Your Website Visits
Take your monthly budget and divide it by your average CPC.

Example: $4,000 budget ÷ $5 CPC = 800 website visits

Step 2: Estimate Your Leads
Multiply your website visits by your website conversion rate.

Example: 800 visits × 10% = 80 leads

Step 3: Estimate Your Customers
Multiply your leads by your sales conversion rate.

Example: 80 leads × 60% = 48 new customers

Pretty cool, right? You can adjust the numbers to fit your business and see what budget might make sense.

General Guidelines to Keep in Mind

Even with the formula, here are some helpful tips when deciding how much to spend:

1. Start Small

If you’re new to Google Ads, don’t go all-in right away. Start with a smaller budget, gather data, and scale up once you understand what works.

2. Watch Keyword Competition

Highly competitive keywords are more expensive. Instead, use long-tail keywords—they’re more specific, less competitive, and usually cheaper.

3. Use the Right Keyword Match Type

Avoid broad match keywords—they’ll burn through your budget fast. Use phrase match or exact match for better control.

4. Target Smaller Areas First

The wider the geographic area you target, the more budget you’ll need. Start local, then expand as needed.

5. Prioritize Ad Quality

Google rewards ads that are relevant and well-written with lower CPCs. Take the time to create strong ad copy and focused landing pages.

6. Test & Optimize (Always)

This is where most businesses fail. You can’t “set it and forget it.” Review and optimize your campaigns regularly—adjust keywords, ads, landing pages, and bidding strategies.

Final Thoughts

There’s no magic number for how much to spend on Google Ads—it all depends on your goals, your market, and your performance. But with the formula above and a solid testing strategy, you can confidently estimate your budget and scale your results over time.
